This month, the Diablo Woodworkers is pleased to feature club member Dave Wittenbrock, who will host our upcoming Woodshop Tour at his home shop.
Dave’s interest in woodworking began early, building simple wooden models of ships and cars with the few tools his father allowed him to use. Many of those early creations met a fiery end; “Fireworks were more available in those days,” he jokes.

As a homeowner, Dave became an avid DIYer. When he and his family purchased their current home, he took on major remodeling work after completing classes with the Owner Builder group in Berkeley. Working on a tight budget, he handled much of the framing, drywall, wiring, windows, siding, and plumbing himself—with help from a flexible contractor. Four years later, the result was a home they still love today.

After retiring from Chevron in 2000, Dave focused on woodworking as a serious hobby, taking classes through Mt. Diablo Adult Ed. as well as classes in Alameda and the College of the Redwoods. His projects evolved from furniture for his own home to commissioned pieces for others, including several collaborations with an interior decorator.

Today, Dave devotes his time to turning and box building—crafts that continue to inspire his creativity. Dave is opening his shop to members this month, hosting the club’s upcoming Woodshop Tour. It’s a great opportunity to see his workspace, learn about his tools and techniques, and enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at where his craftsmanship comes to life.
