Like many young families starting out, necessity and early poverty defined his woodworking projects that met his family’s needs and budget, ranging from kitchen remodeling to his kid's bedroom furniture. As the years passed, careers moved them around the country, providing ample opportunities for even more remodeling kitchens, bathrooms and miscellaneous cabinetry projects.
After retiring from the corporate world almost 20 years ago, he shifted his emphasis from items he needed to furniture he wanted to build including chairs, tables, beds, bedroom suites, studio consoles, media centers, coffee tables, and desks. Many of these items were commissioned projects.
An active member of the Sierra-Nevada Fine Furniture Makers Guild, he also served as its president, and taught classes in advanced wood finishing for Woodcraft in Sacramento.
Over the course of his woodworking experience, he has tried to make some sense of the mediums we use to beautify and protect our wood projects. As Doug says, "There is actually some really solid science behind wood finishes, if we understand why and how these witches brew work, finishing can be undertaken with more confidence and creativity."
